Our beautiful house reef can be reached via the beach of the Toubia Hotel. A short 30-50 meters walk into the water will bring you to a 2 -7 meter deep seagrass field. Further out there is a coral reef where you can see shrimp, moray, a wide variety of coral fish, lionfish, sea horses and sea turtles.
The Salem Express operated as a passenger ferry between Safaga, Egypt and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. After a history starting in France, 1966 and including several name changes, she sank 25 years later off the Egyptian coast. In the early hours of 17 December, 1991 she collided with the Hamdala Reefs. As the Captain tried to disengage the ship from the sharp edge of the reef, the ship quickly took on water and sank. We can still find it there today, resting in the deep and now home to many species of marine life. It is a striking example of human hubris and the power of nature in reclaiming her space.
